MEETING WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES AT THE CBAC

Dr. Francisco Edison Pacifici Guimarães, PNCQ Superintendent, presented data and informed about the results, statistics and the new advancements of PNCQ in relation to its programs during the meeting of the National Program of Quality Control – PNCQ with the representatives of the Clinical Laboratories and the Participating Blood Banks. The meeting was held on the 20th of June, during the 45th Brazilian Congress of Clinical Analyses – CBAC.

At present, PNCQ serves 5.111 laboratories of Clinical Analyses, 44 of Cytopathology, 16 of Molecular Biology, 92 Blood Centers and Blood banks and 19 of Toxicology and Work Medicine. It provides samples for 90 programs; in 2017, 1 million and 129 thousand samples were produced.

According to Dr. José Abol Corrêa, PNCQ Superintendent, “the main challenge is to participate in a quality control that is focused on the patient’s safety. This is the fundamental focus of the quality control: to offer compatible and real reports in order the physician may treat the patient without damaging him“.

According to Dr. Abol, the quality control doesn’t have the function to teach the laboratory how to do the service, it only detects a possible error or non-conformity, what can already be easily minimized today by the technological advancements in the area in the last years. “When we started the Brazilian Society of Clinical Analyses – SBAC, more than 50 years ago, most of the tests were manual, and depended a lot on the knowledge of the professionals. Nowadays we possess automated technology with the development of computing, generating a reduction in the amount of errors”, he commented. However, there are still many laboratories that don’t do quality control, and this may have an impact on the reliability of the diagnoses handed to the patient.

The practice of quick tests sales in drugstores was also debated during the meeting. The laboratory representatives complained about the high demand that they face to keep their businesses working while in the drugstores there won’t be, at first, any kind of evaluation of these products. “We are obliged to fulfill a series of measures to issue a report. Won’t they need to do quality control? The error identification allows the laboratory to improve“, pondered Dr. Abol.

At the end of the meeting, a smartphone, a tablet and 5 registrations for CBAC 2019 – which will be held in the city of Belo Horizonte/MG – were drawn.
